Purse snatching from the old and weak is the new trend. Hopping out of a car and grabbing the purse and the victims have been seriously hurt.
Starting with 85 year old Delores Corpus over the summer. She had succumbed to her injuries and died days later after suffering a head injury. The suspect knocked her to the ground while taking her purse and she hit her head.
A 62-year-old woman was targeted at 5 a.m. as she was walking to work near the corner of Aala and North Kukui streets in Kalihi. The attack left the woman in critical condition with a ruptured spleen.
80-year-old woman was waiting for the start of a dawn tai chi class to begin Monday near College Walk and Kukui Street in Chinatown. She was sitting on the wall of the Nuuanu Stream when sources say two men approached her and started a conversation. The suspects then swiped the woman’s bag. She fell and suffered a cut to the chin.

These are just a few of the crimes. Hawaii has it’s fair share of crimes due to drugs and lack of employment. But mostly drugs and alcohol play a large part in the dysfunction.

Elder Abuse laws are in force. I hope the judges in Hawaii will enforce the maximum sentences.
The Elder Abuse Justice Unit (EAJU) prosecutes all felony crimes where the victims are age 60 or older. The unit, established in 2008, vertically prosecutes elder abuse cases, meaning one attorney handles the case from start to finish. This establishes a thorough understanding of the crime and a good rapport with the victim. The attorneys in this unit are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet with law enforcement and agencies that provide services for persons age 60 or older. The EAJU also works closely with victim advocates to give victims the support they need.
From 2008 to present, EAJU has seen an increase of 294% in the number of elder abuse cases they have handled. In the past five years, the EAJU has met with or presented to more than 50,000 people and distributed over approximately 20,000 Elder Abuse Information Brochures.
